Dress for Success

While growing up, my parents often reminded me that outward appearance has a lot to do with inward attitude. Recently a colleague reminded his team member that one should dress for the job they want, not for the job they currently have.

Anyway, I guess there is something to be said about the fact that how you dress says something about who you are. Even the Bible has something to say about how we dress each day and I find myself in constant need to adapt my wardrobe in order to dress according to God’s Word. Every day this verse presents new challenges to me as I find myself still learning to dress for success:

Since God chose you to be the holy people, whom He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

Compassion - an outward expression that communicates: "I’ll help you!" I’m always in need of clothing myself with a good layer of sensitivity to the needs of others.

Kindness – is displayed in a very practical and purposeful way. I recognize I must “wear” kindness by giving people what they need, not just what they deserve.

Humility – a real must before going out for the day. And yet, it’s the piece of clothing I can most easily overlook... Admitting I make mistakes and being big-hearted enough to share the credit with others for a job well done.

Gentleness - that subtle reminder to “handle with care” every person and situation I encounter. Because of my own experiences recently, I’ve had a heightened sensitivity to how fragile people can be because of situations and circumstances, especially those beyond their control. My obedience to be covered in gentleness can easily become a source of encouragement to others along the way.

Patience – putting up with those who might want to put me down. Sometimes this can be hard to put on but it can sometimes be more difficult to keep on throughout the day. My patience can be put to the test in the smallest of things at any given moment, so I find that a few extra layers of patience is best.

Love – it’s the “overcoat” needed for any day. Hey, it’s covers everything! And besides, it’s the perfect protection from the unexpected storms.

So what is it that will give my dress that extra “flare” – that will stand out to others? Are you ready for this?  It is God’s Word at home in me.

Let the words of Christ in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you wise. Use His words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through Him to God the Father.  Colossians 3:16-17

Have a great day and enjoy dressing up today! It’s a good thing!
