Staying Two Steps Ahead of Change

We’re in an unusual season as businesspeople. There are a number of significant changes taking place simultaneously that impact how we do business now and in the future. Some of these changes are:

  • A major decrease in the global workforce
  • A national shift toward urban living
  • The mobilization of customer engagement
  • A shift toward an experience-minded economy
  • The secularization of society

A lot is happening and if we’re not careful to adapt to the changes we can end up irrelevant. As Jack Welch said, “If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near.”

How do we avoid that fate? How do we, like a great chess player, stay two steps ahead of the game?

We certainly have to be nimble and athletic so that we don’t adapt too late. But we also have to be wise so that we are not merely changing for the sake of changing. Lastly, I believe we have to be prayerful. Only God knows the future and if we remain near to him and listen, he promises to lead us.

In the end, these are not just guides for dealing with the change surrounding our business lives. What change is happening around your personal life today?

Be nimble, wise, and prayerful, and you will always do well in adapting to the change.
